7,000-plus migrants leave Karnataka in 6 trains

BENGALURU:

With the Karnataka government finally in sync with the burning desire of its stranded ‘guest workers’ to head home, six special trains left for various destinations on Sunday carrying around 7,353 passengers.

According to SWR, the first train of the day left for Udhampur (J&K) from  Chikkabanawar at 12.30 pm with 985 passengers, mostly workers.

The second train to Bankura (West Bengal) left from Malur in Kolar district with 1,200 passengers and 47 children at 2.10 pm. The third train to Gwalior (MP)  left with 1,068 passengers at 4.05 pm from Chikkabanawar.

The fourth special to Danapur (Bihar)  left Malur at 4.55 pm with 1,200 on board, while the last train of the day left for Gorakhpur (UP) with 1,200 passengers.

The fifth Shramik special from Chikkabanwar to Gorakpur in Uttar Pradesh with 1200 passengers departed Chikbanawar at 17.55 hrs

The Sixth Shramik Special departed for Agarthala in Tripura from Chikkbanawar at 19.55 hrs with 1160 passengers belonging to northeastern region.

All the passengers were provided with packed meals, comprising rice, chapattis, biscuits, cookies, pickle, buttermilk and a bottle of water.

SWR officials said that as a precautionary measure, no pantry car was attached to the trains and meals for the passengers would come from IRCTC base kitchens.

SWR has Run twenty one Shramik Specials so far based on demand of State Govt for citizens to return to their home towns after the Lockdown due to Covid-19 Pandemic.
