Bengaluru: The elevated Namma Metro Pink Line has received CMRS clearance, Karnataka Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said on Wednesday, marking a change from earlier reports that the statutory safety authorisation was still awaited. He said the state had asked the Union government to provide an inauguration date and was ready to begin public service once a date was given.
The update gives a new status to Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s statement earlier on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected in Bengaluru on November 15, with the Pink Line inauguration among the plans for the visit. The two developments do not amount to a confirmed inauguration date: Byre Gowda’s message says the state has requested a date, while Shivakumar’s statement described the event as planned around the expected visit.
Clearance applies to the elevated stretch
Byre Gowda’s statement specifically refers to the elevated portion of the Pink Line. The 7.5-km section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere has six stations: Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIMB, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere.
The elevated section is separate from the 13.76-km underground stretch between Tavarekere and Nagawara. The clearance announced by Byre Gowda is for the elevated portion; it should not be read as an announcement that the entire Pink Line is cleared or ready to open.
From inspection to safety sanction
Earlier coverage reported that the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) conducted a statutory inspection of the elevated corridor from October 6 to 8. BMRCL subsequently submitted compliance with the observations raised during the inspection. Byre Gowda’s Wednesday message now says the safety sanction has been obtained after considerable effort.
That sequence matters for commuters because the earlier inspection and compliance process were not themselves the final authorisation. The new announcement concerns that safety milestone, while the public opening still depends on the inauguration date sought from the Union government and the start of service being formally announced.
November 15 remains a plan, not a fixed opening date
Shivakumar said Modi was expected in Bengaluru on November 15 and linked the elevated Pink Line inauguration to the visit. Byre Gowda said Karnataka had written to the Union government seeking an inauguration date. Neither statement confirms that the inauguration will take place on November 15 or that passenger services will start that day.
The state says it is ready to launch public service after it receives the date. Until the date is announced, the corridor’s inauguration and the beginning of passenger operations remain unconfirmed.
