Metro Ride, Selfies and a Message to Bengaluru: CM DK Shivakumar Travels Like a Common Citizen to Meet His People
Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has said the elevated Namma Metro Pink Line is planned for inauguration during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed Bengaluru visit on November 15. The line is not yet cleared for passenger operations: statutory authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) remains pending.
The proposed ceremony and the start of regular metro services are separate steps. Even if the line is inaugurated during the Prime Minister’s visit, commuters can board trains only after the required safety authorisation is issued. No passenger-service start date has been confirmed.
What the proposed inauguration covers
The plan concerns the 7.5-km elevated section between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere, not the full Pink Line. The section has six stations: Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIM Bangalore, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital and Tavarekere. It is the first part of the wider corridor linking south Bengaluru with Nagawara.
The underground portion from Tavarekere to Nagawara is about 13.76 km and remains a separate construction and commissioning stage. The November 15 plan therefore relates only to the elevated stretch along Bannerghatta Road.
Safety authorisation still determines when passengers can ride
The CMRS carried out a statutory inspection of the elevated stretch from October 6 to 8. The inspection is a required safety step before the line can open to the public. BMRCL must meet the conditions and observations recorded during the process, and final authorisation has not yet been issued.
Shivakumar’s announcement puts a possible inauguration on the political and administrative calendar, but it does not certify that the line is ready for commercial service. A ceremony can take place before passenger operations begin.
