Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar Strongly Opposes ‘One Nation One Election’ Proposal
Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar has strongly opposed the Centre’s proposed ‘One Nation One Election’ initiative, calling it a politically motivated and power-centric proposal that could weaken India’s federal structure.
Addressing a dialogue organised by the Joint Parliamentary Study Committee on the subject at a private hotel in Bengaluru on Saturday, Shivakumar said the proposal poses a serious threat to democratic principles and state autonomy.
“Proposal Designed for Political Convenience”
Shivakumar alleged that the initiative was being designed primarily for the convenience of those ruling at the Centre.
“As KPCC President and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, I categorically reject this proposal,” he said.
He argued that the plan could centralise power excessively and reduce the strength and independence of states within India’s federal framework.
Karnataka Assembly Already Passed Resolution
The Deputy CM pointed out that the Karnataka Legislative Assembly had already passed a resolution opposing the ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal.
He also read out the contents of the resolution during the discussion meeting.
Questions Over Political Stability
Shivakumar questioned the practical feasibility of implementing simultaneous elections across the country.
“What happens if a government collapses midway due to political instability, no-confidence motions or lack of majority? What is the solution then?” he asked.
He noted that elections are held at different times in different states:
Karnataka held elections three years ago
Tamil Nadu and Kerala went to polls recently
Punjab and Telangana had elections during separate periods
“How can all these election cycles realistically be synchronised?” he questioned.
“Practically Impossible”
Calling the proposal impractical, Shivakumar stated that simultaneous elections across India are “practically impossible.”
He further alleged that the move was an attempt to suppress the voice of regional parties and opposition forces.
Congress Stand Clear
The Deputy CM said the Karnataka Government does not support the proposal and reiterated that the state Congress leadership stands firmly with the national position taken by the party.
Leaders Present at Meeting
The interaction organised by the Joint Parliamentary Study Committee was attended by several political leaders and public representatives.
Among those present were: Committee Chairman P.P. Chaudhary, Former Karnataka CM Veerappa Moily, Ministers H.K. Patil and Priyank Kharge, Karnataka BJP President B.Y. Vijayendra, MPs G.C. Chandrashekhar and P.C. Mohan, Former MP Prof. Rajeev Gowda and several representatives from different political parties.
