Pothole repairs: BBMP chief suspends Road Infrastructure (East) Executive Engineer for ‘laxity’

Date:

Gaurav Gupta’s strict action against engineer is a move to counter negative public perception of BBMP

BENGALURU:

In a major in-house crackdown on tardy civic officials, BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta has suspended Road Infrastructure Executive Engineer (East) MG Nagaraju for ‘laxity’ over pothole repairs.

The order of November 5, a copy of which is with TheBengaluruLive, clearly states that Executive Engineer Nagaraju has failed to discharge his duty in filling potholes in East zone — an area which sees much VVIP movement.

As per the order copy, Bengaluru city has around 13,000 km of roads falling under different zones. The respective zonal engineers are responsible for maintainance and development of these roads.

Bad press

In recent times, there has been scathing criticism in the visual and print media of bad stretches and dug-up areas on many city roads, much to the embarrassment of BBMP.

The widespread negative publicity in this connection has led to the general feeling that BBMP is falling behind in carrying out its responsibilities in filling potholes. The Palike has had to resort to damage control by urging other agencies and authorities to execute their work in a manner that does not obstruct
smooth traffic flow or inconvenience pedestrians.

In this connection, it is felt in the higher echelons of BBMP that Executive Engineer, Road Infrastructure (East), MG Nagaraju has contributed to the negative public perception of the civic agency by being lax in discharging his responsibility of undertaking road repair work.

“It is in this context that you, MG Nagaraju, who is working in the Road Infrastructure (East) division, have been suspended from service,” says the order issued by K Dayanand, Special Commissioner (Administration), on the directions of the BBMP Chief Commissioner.
