Bengaluru: Bengaluru East City Corporation officials have been directed to identify disused vehicles left on roads and in public places, arrange their removal with police assistance, and repair damaged footpaths as part of preparations for the Ward One campaign.
Additional Commissioner Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar issued the directions at a preparatory meeting, asking departments to coordinate road, drainage, sanitation and horticulture work in the ward where the campaign will be held.
Potholes, pedestrian access and bus stops
Officials must identify important roads and junctions requiring repairs, fill potholes immediately and prioritise problems obstructing traffic. Damaged paver blocks and slabs on footpaths are to be repaired, with obstructions removed to make pedestrian movement safer.
The corporation also called for bus-stop surroundings to be kept clean. Stops causing inconvenience should be inspected and, where necessary, considered for relocation in coordination with the relevant departments. Unauthorised flex boards, banners and posters in public places are to be removed.
Prevent rubbish from returning to cleared spots
The directions call for thorough cleaning of identified garbage blackspots and continued monitoring to prevent waste from accumulating again. Major roads, markets and public places must be cleaned, while construction debris and other waste should be removed in accordance with the rules.
Sewers and stormwater drains are to be cleaned regularly to prevent silt and waste accumulation and allow rainwater to flow freely. Departments were asked to prioritise major stormwater drains and lakes, coordinate maintenance and finish pending work.
Roadside trees must be maintained so branches do not obstruct traffic or the public. Pruning should be undertaken where needed, alongside cleaning and maintenance of parks and other public spaces.
Joint work and quick response to complaints
The Additional Commissioner called for coordination among BESCOM, the Bengaluru water board, Railways, traffic police and other agencies to resolve issues involving more than one department. Public complaints should be examined and addressed promptly.
Officials were also told to involve residents’ welfare associations, local organisations and citizens in cleaning and development work, and explain the campaign’s objectives and planned activities to residents.
All relevant departments’ officers and staff should be available at the site on the campaign day to carry out their responsibilities and respond to complaints. The corporation’s chief engineers, executive engineers and officials from the departments concerned attended the meeting.
