Bengaluru, June 1: In one of the largest anti-online betting operations conducted in India, the Karnataka State Cyber Command, in coordination with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), has launched a major crackdown on illegal online betting networks operating across the country.
According to a press note issued by the Cyber Command, the operation targeted approximately 8,750 betting websites, mobile applications and fraudulent betting URLs allegedly involved in facilitating illegal cricket betting and other online gambling activities.
Acting on credible intelligence inputs, specialized cyber investigation teams carried out coordinated online investigations that identified organized groups operating large-scale illegal betting platforms. Authorities found that these networks were using mirror domains, sub-domains and cloned URLs to evade detection and continue their operations.
Based on the findings, a criminal case has been registered as Crime No. 2/2026 under Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is currently underway.
Officials said the illegal betting ecosystem has caused significant financial losses to thousands of citizens. Apart from monetary losses, victims have reportedly suffered data breaches, mental harassment and severe financial distress due to addiction and debt arising from betting activities.
The Cyber Command noted that many vulnerable individuals lost substantial savings through credit-based betting systems and were pushed into financial hardship.
Authorities believe the crackdown has prevented further losses to the public and significantly disrupted the operations of illegal betting syndicates functioning through digital platforms.
Investigators have now initiated advanced technical and financial analysis to trace the flow of money invested through these betting networks and identify the operators, beneficiaries and associated entities behind the platforms.
The Karnataka State Cyber Command said further legal action under the Information Technology Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is being pursued against those involved.
Director General of Police, Cyber Command, Dr. Pronab Mohanty, IPS, reaffirmed the department’s commitment to protecting citizens from cyber-enabled crimes and strengthening digital safety.
The Cyber Command also acknowledged the support of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and its personnel for their assistance in carrying out the large-scale operation.
Officials said the investigation remains active and additional action is expected as authorities continue to identify the individuals and organizations linked to the illegal betting network.
