Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the premature release of 28 eligible life convicts lodged in various central prisons across the state on the basis of good conduct, Home Minister Priyank Kharge said on Friday.
According to a press release issued by the minister, the Cabinet considered a total of 45 cases and approved the premature release of 28 life convicts based on good conduct and other prescribed criteria.
In one additional case, premature release has been approved subject to the concurrence of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. This takes the total number of life convicts eligible for premature release to 29, Kharge said.
The cases of life convicts lodged in different central prisons in Karnataka were examined on the basis of government guidelines, their conduct in prison, the period of incarceration and other stipulated criteria.
The Cabinet decision will now be sent to the Governor for approval, Kharge said. The eligible convicts will be released prematurely after the required approval is received.
