CM D.K. Shivakumar Discusses Mekedatu, Mahadayi and Krishna Water Issues with Union Jal Shakti Minister
New Delhi, June 12: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Friday said that he, along with senior leaders Ramalinga Reddy and T.B. Jayachandra, met Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil and submitted a memorandum seeking the Centre’s support on several key irrigation and water resource projects pending before the Union Government.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, the Chief Minister said the meeting focused on long-pending water-related issues that are crucial for Karnataka’s agricultural development, drinking water security and irrigation infrastructure.
Mekedatu, Krishna and Mahadayi Issues Raised
Responding to questions on his meeting with the Union Jal Shakti Minister, D.K. Shivakumar said the state delegation discussed several important matters, including the implementation of the Supreme Court’s directions concerning the Mekedatu Project.
The delegation also urged the Centre to issue the necessary notification in accordance with the award of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal, a long-pending demand of Karnataka.
In addition, discussions were held regarding the Mahadayi water dispute, which remains a critical issue for several districts in North Karnataka that are dependent on the project for drinking water supply.
The Chief Minister further pressed for the release of the ₹5,300 crore central assistance promised for the Bhadra Upper Bank Project, stating that the project is vital for irrigation development and agricultural growth in the region.
Union Minister to Inaugurate New Tungabhadra Dam Gates
D.K. Shivakumar also announced that Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil is expected to visit Karnataka for the inauguration of the newly installed gates at the Tungabhadra Dam.
He said Chief Ministers from neighbouring states are also likely to participate in the event.
Expressing confidence in the Union Government’s approach, the Chief Minister said he believes that authorities entrusted with delivering justice would take a fair and balanced view on Karnataka’s legitimate demands concerning water-sharing and irrigation projects.
Memorandum Submitted to Prime Minister
Replying to another question regarding the memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, D.K. Shivakumar said the document covers a broad range of development issues concerning Karnataka.
According to the Chief Minister, the memorandum includes requests related to:
- Agriculture
- Irrigation
- Urban development
- Transport and mobility infrastructure
- Financial assistance for major state projects
He said the Prime Minister would examine the proposals and take an appropriate decision.
Rajya Sabha Elections Reflect People’s Mandate
When asked about the unopposed election of Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Khera and Mansoor Ali Khan to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, D.K. Shivakumar said the outcome reflected the mandate given by the people of the state.
“We had the required numerical strength. The people of Karnataka blessed us with that strength, and that strength has now yielded results,” he said.
The Chief Minister’s remarks came after Congress candidates Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Khera and Mansoor Ali Khan, along with BJP candidate M. Nagaraj, were elected unopposed to the Upper House.
Cabinet Expansion: ‘Will See in the Coming Days’
Responding to questions on a possible expansion of the Karnataka Cabinet, D.K. Shivakumar maintained a cautious stance.
“We will see in the coming days,” he said, without elaborating further on the issue.
The Chief Minister’s comments have once again fuelled speculation about a possible Cabinet reshuffle or expansion in Karnataka, although no official announcement has been made so far.
