Bengaluru, January 20: In a major cybercrime breakthrough, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) Cyber Crime Police Station has successfully recovered ₹2.16 crore lost in a sophisticated email spoofing fraud, Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh announced on Monday.

Addressing a press conference, the Commissioner said the case was registered in December 2025 after a reputed medical company reported a fraudulent email transaction. Crucially, the complainant approached the police within 15–20 minutes of the fraud, enabling swift action during the critical “golden hour.”

Nigeria-Origin Email, Fake Identity Used

Preliminary investigation revealed that the fraud originated from Nigeria, where cybercriminals created a fake email ID impersonating a well-known medical company. Using this spoofed email, they manipulated financial communication and diverted funds.

“The moment the complaint was received, our teams initiated legal procedures, traced banking routes, and immediately froze the accounts involved,” the Police Commissioner said.

Entire ₹2.16 Crore Recovered

Following account tracing, freezing, and completion of court formalities, the entire amount of ₹2.16 crore was released and credited back to the complainant’s account.

“This is a classic example of how timely reporting helps police save public money. Had the complaint been delayed, recovery would have been extremely difficult,” the Commissioner noted.

Investigation Continues, Arrests Likely

Police confirmed that the fraudulent email originated from a foreign country, complicating immediate arrests. However, investigation is ongoing into Indian bank accounts where the money was routed.

One of the beneficiary accounts reportedly belongs to an elderly woman in India, and police said her role is under scrutiny. “If funds have entered an account, legal responsibility applies. Action will be taken as per law,” the Commissioner clarified.

Advisory to Public

Police reiterated their advisory urging citizens and companies to report cyber fraud immediately to maximize chances of recovery.
