Centre Yet to Receive Proposal for Bengaluru’s Second Greenfield Airport, Says Civil Aviation Ministry
New Delhi/Bengaluru: The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has informed the Lok Sabha that the Central government has not yet received any proposal from the Karnataka government or any airport developer for setting up a second Greenfield airport near Bengaluru under the Greenfield Airports Policy.
Replying to an unstarred question by MP P.C. Mohan, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had conducted pre-feasibility studies for three potential sites for a second airport at the request of the Karnataka government. The pre-feasibility study report has already been submitted to the State government.
The Ministry said no proposal has been received thereafter from the Karnataka government or any airport developer for the project.
The reply stated that Bengaluru airport currently has an annual passenger handling capacity of 51.5 million passengers and an average daily handling capacity of 141,000 passengers. The average daily passenger footfall during FY 2026-27 up to June 2026 was approximately 123,800 passengers.
The Ministry further said the terminal capacity at Kempegowda International Airport is expected to increase to 80 million passengers per annum (MPPA) by 2030. This includes Terminal 2 Phase 2, which will expand capacity from the existing 25 MPPA to 45 MPPA.
The government also noted that concession agreements governing airports contain capacity expansion triggers, requiring expansion work to begin once traffic exceeds specified limits. Airport operators are responsible for preparing master plans and development plans for future expansion projects.
