Census Duty Obstructed in Bengaluru: Resident Booked for Abusing Female Staff During National Survey
Bengaluru: In a serious incident highlighting challenges faced during national data collection, a case has been registered after census officials were obstructed and a female staff member was verbally abused while performing duties under the National Census–2027 exercise in Bengaluru North.
According to the Bengaluru North City Corporation (BNCC), the incident began on April 20, when enumerator Smt. Veena, assigned to Ward No. 43, visited Peri Monarch Apartment near Sultanpalya Main Road in R.T. Nagar to collect census details. The resident allegedly refused to provide the required information.
The situation escalated on April 25, when Supervisor Smt. Rashmi R (Circle–2) revisited the premises for verification. During this visit, the resident not only refused to cooperate but also obstructed official duties and verbally abused the female officer using inappropriate language.
Following the complaint, Dr. Lokesh, Census Charge Officer, registered a case against the individual under Section 11(1) of the Census Act, 1948, along with Sections 223 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Strong Warning from Authorities
Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar issued a stern warning, stating that census work is of national importance, and any obstruction to officials discharging their duties is a punishable offence. He emphasised that strict legal action will be taken against such violations.
The Commissioner has urged citizens to fully cooperate with census enumerators and provide accurate information, stressing that participation in the census is a legal responsibility of every citizen.
The incident underscores the need for public awareness and cooperation to ensure smooth conduct of the nationwide Census–2027, which plays a critical role in policy planning and governance.
