Bengaluru: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first water utility in India to receive the prestigious ISO 50001:2018 certification for energy management systems.
The certification, awarded by Bureau Veritas on April 14, 2026, recognizes BWSSB’s excellence in implementing efficient and internationally compliant energy management practices. The recognition specifically covers the Board’s bulk water supply pumping stations located at TK Halli, Harohalli, and Tataguni, where large-scale water supply operations are managed with high efficiency and sustainability standards.
The certification also extends to key support functions at the Cauvery Bhavan headquarters and the overall process of ensuring continuous water supply across the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits.
Under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, BWSSB has taken significant strides in strengthening Bengaluru’s long-term water infrastructure and sustainability framework. Senior officials of the Board, led by Chairman Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar, met the Deputy Chief Minister and formally presented the certification, expressing their gratitude for his leadership and support.
Appreciating the achievement, D.K. Shivakumar described the ISO 50001:2018 certification as a landmark accomplishment that reflects the government’s commitment to building world-class and sustainable water infrastructure in Bengaluru. He stated that the efficient management of large-scale pumping stations ensures reliable, uninterrupted water supply to lakhs of citizens while setting new national benchmarks. He added that such milestones contribute to transforming “Brand Bengaluru” into a future-ready, climate-resilient global city.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Tushar Girinath, said the recognition is a result of the dedication and hard work of the entire BWSSB team.
Chairman Dr. Ram Prasath Manohar emphasized that the Board remains committed to providing safe and clean drinking water to every household. He noted that continuous technological upgradation and adherence to international standards have played a key role in achieving this milestone.
This global recognition builds upon BWSSB’s earlier national achievement, when it became the first water board in India to receive the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for its piped drinking water supply management system after a rigorous six-month evaluation. Together, these recognitions highlight BWSSB’s rapid institutional transformation and its commitment to delivering high-quality services to the citizens of Bengaluru.
