Bengaluru: A fresh political storm has erupted within Karnataka BJP after former minister and Yeshwanthpura MLA S.T. Somashekhar wrote a strongly worded letter to senior leader B.S. Yediyurappa, raising explosive questions over party culture and internal functioning.

In his letter dated March 30, 2026, Somashekhar questioned whether loyalty and re-entry into the BJP now require “boot-licking,” directly targeting the leadership and internal dynamics of the party. His remarks, particularly questions numbered 5 and 6, have triggered sharp political reactions.

Somashekhar asked pointedly: “If I want to return to the BJP, do I need to lick your boots? Or the boots of your son and state BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra?” These remarks have been widely seen as a direct challenge to the current leadership structure within the party.

The controversy stems from an earlier statement allegedly made by BJP leader M. Rudresh, who reportedly questioned Somashekhar’s standing in the party using derogatory language. This came after Somashekhar raised issues related to the NICE road project and farmers’ land concerns in the Assembly.

Expressing his displeasure, Somashekhar stated that despite being a six-time contestant and four-time winner from Yeshwanthpura, he was being undermined by individuals with no electoral credibility. He further questioned whether such statements had the backing or approval of senior leaders.

The letter also reflects deeper internal tensions, as Somashekhar recalled Yediyurappa’s earlier assurance that he should remain in the BJP and that things would be “set right” under Vijayendra’s leadership. However, he claimed that subsequent developments and local-level conflicts forced him to distance himself from party activities.

Political observers view this as a significant signal of unrest within Karnataka BJP, especially ahead of upcoming electoral battles. The sharp tone and direct questions indicate growing dissatisfaction among senior leaders over leadership style and decision-making processes.

Somashekhar has now sought a clear response from Yediyurappa, stating that his future political course will depend on the reply. The letter has not only exposed internal rifts but also raised broader questions about hierarchy, loyalty, and leadership culture within the party.
