South Bengaluru City Corporation Clears 6.10 km of Encroached Footpaths in a Day
Bengaluru, July 18: South Bengaluru City Corporation on Saturday cleared encroachments from a total of 6.10 km of footpaths across its jurisdiction as part of an intensified drive to improve pedestrian safety and mobility.
The operation was carried out on the directions of Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda and under the guidance of South Bengaluru City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh. Encroachments on footpaths along major and sub-roads were removed in coordination with traffic police, law and order police and other departments.
In Jayanagar Zone, a 1.20-km stretch of footpath around Indira Gandhi Circle near Sarakki Market in the Jayanagar division was cleared. During the operation, two shops, two pushcarts, five sheets, four steps and ramps, and two advertisement boards were removed. A bar and restaurant encroaching on the footpath was fined Rs.10,000 and the encroachment was cleared.
In Bommanahalli Zone, encroachments were removed from 3.10 km of footpaths, including a 1.10-km stretch on Hosur Road and a 2-km stretch on 20th Main Road in the BTM Layout division. In the HSR Layout division, footpaths covering 1.80 km, including the 80 Feet Road and 22nd Cross Road, were cleared for public use.
Overall, the drive removed 34 shops and petty shops, 21 pull carts, 18 sheets and canopies, 25 steps and ramps, 22 advertisement boards and poles, and eight temporary sheds. Around two tonnes of waste generated during the operation were disposed of.
Corporation staff and workers participated in the drive. JCB machines were deployed to remove illegal sheds, concrete steps and other encroachments, while tractors were used to transport debris and excavated material.
