Bengaluru: Shocking revelations have emerged regarding drug consumption among female inmates in Karnataka’s prisons, indicating that they are the highest users of drugs in the state. Authorities have been conducting drug tests in prisons, with medical staff administering tests using drug kits. Several inmates have tested positive, and those who did are being isolated for treatment.

To assess the extent of addiction, samples have been sent to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). Treatment preparations will commence once the reports are received. It has been noted that drug addiction is particularly prevalent among inmates under investigation, while sentenced prisoners show lower levels of addiction.

Despite the ongoing crackdown on the supply of drugs, including MDMA and cocaine, these substances have previously been available in state prisons. Recent drug tests have revealed a significant number of positive cases, particularly among female inmates, who have been found to consume substances like cannabis and other drugs. Some women attempted to cheat the tests by mixing their urine samples with water.

Extensive drug testing has been conducted in Bengaluru and Mysuru prisons, with reports of positive drug use already sent to NIMHANS. This data will help determine the severity of addiction and whether inmates can be rehabilitated. Following the report, prison authorities have decided to provide separate treatment for those who test positive. Furthermore, it has been mandated that all prisons in the state conduct daily drug tests on at least 10% of inmates.
