Bengaluru South MP joins Uttara Kannada MP Anantkumar Hegde in opposing BBMP move to name Padarayanapura streets after Muslim ‘leaders’

Naming roads in Muslim-dominated localities after Muslims reeks of two-nation theory of Muslim League, says Surya

BENGALURU:

Within hours of TheBengaluruLive breaking the story about BBMP deciding to name around 11 streets in the Padarayanapura locality after Muslim ‘leaders’, the BJP’s Bengaluru South MP and youth icon Tejasvi Surya followed the BJP’s Uttara Kannada MP Anantkumar Hegde in opposing the streets-renaming.

Surya shot off a letter to BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, requesting him to revise and finalize the list of roads to be named after personalities only after wide public discussion.

Expressing his opposition to the streets-renaming, Surya tweeted, “Along with Sri @AnantkumarH, I’m filing objections to proposed naming of roads in Padarayanapura with only Muslim names. Naming roads in Muslim-dominated locality after Muslims reeks of the same communal mentality as 2-nation theory & Muslim League’s demand of separate electorates.”

‘Dangerous move’

Surya, who is popular among the younger generation as a Hindutva icon, said in his objection submitted to the Commissioner, “It has come to my attention that Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has proposed to name roads after certain personalities in Ward Number 135 of Padarayanapura. The list of names mooted by BBMP has only Muslim names.”

He further said, “Christening of roads in a Muslim-dominated locality with only Muslim names reeks of the same communal mentality of the two-nation theory and the Muslim League’s demand of separate electorates for Hindus and Muslims. This is dangerous and must be condemned.”

‘No dearth of non-Muslim icons’

Surya’s letter added, “There is no dearth of non-Muslim public figures and patriots after whom roads can be named… I request you to immediately revise the list and finalize the list of roads to be named after personalities only after wide public discussion.”
