Bengaluru: A sharp hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices—reportedly reaching around ₹991 in one go—has triggered widespread outrage, with the Bengaluru Hotel Owners’ Association writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking immediate intervention.
In its letter, the association highlighted the severe impact of rising LPG prices on the hospitality sector. It noted that commercial LPG rates have increased by nearly ₹1,200 over the past 60 days, coupled with an 18% tax, pushing hotels and restaurants towards financial distress.

Hotel owners said the situation has worsened due to irregular gas supply, making it difficult to run daily operations. Small and medium establishments are struggling to survive amid rising input costs. The association has urged the Centre to roll back or reduce the recent hike and ensure uninterrupted LPG supply.
The association also requested an opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and present their concerns directly, warning that continued price escalation could lead to closures, job losses, and reduced service capacity across the sector.
Industry and Public Reaction
Hotel owners expressed strong anger, alleging that the steep hike is pushing the industry to the brink. Some warned of a potential statewide shutdown if prices are not revised.
Consumers have also raised concerns, stating that the hike will inevitably lead to higher food prices. Many, especially working professionals and students dependent on hotels for daily meals, said the increased cost of living would further strain their finances.
Political Reactions
The issue has also triggered political debate. Karnataka Minister Byrathi Suresh questioned the timing of the hike following the conclusion of elections in five states, asking how the poor would cope with such increases.
Responding to the criticism, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said LPG pricing is influenced by earlier policy frameworks and global factors. He added that, unlike some countries facing shortages, India continues to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel.
The LPG price hike has now emerged as a major concern for both businesses and consumers, with calls growing for immediate government intervention.
