Bengaluru: GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to take strict action against footpath encroachments along Old Madras Road, including imposing fines and clearing illegal occupations, while ensuring safe and accessible pedestrian pathways.
The instructions were issued during an on-foot inspection conducted from Swami Vivekananda Metro Station to Ulsoor Lake within the jurisdiction of the Bengaluru Central City Corporation.
During the inspection, the Commissioner emphasized the need for dedicated teams to carry out mass cleaning drives on footpaths. He instructed that all pedestrian pathways must be cleared of dust, waste, and debris, and maintained in a clean and visually appealing condition.
Officials were also directed to repair damaged slabs and curb stones on footpaths to ensure smooth and safe movement for pedestrians.
A major concern was identified near the MEG compound wall, where garbage dumping was noticed due to structural damage. Additionally, iron wires protruding towards the footpath were found to be hazardous. The Commissioner immediately instructed concerned authorities over the phone to rectify the issue.
Encroachments near the Anjaneya Temple, including those by a nursery, a granite shop, and along Murphy Road, were also flagged. Maheshwar Rao ordered immediate removal of these encroachments and strict penal action against violators.
He further directed officials to trim or remove tree branches obstructing pedestrian movement, underlining the need to prioritise pedestrian safety and urban cleanliness.
