Yediyurappa finds 835 patients in Bengaluru West have occupied beds beyond 20 days

BENGALURU:

Amid the very real tragedy of large numbers of Covid patients dying for want of hospital beds, there is also unfortunately the compounding factor of recovered patients overstaying in hospital. On Tuesday, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa directed hospitals to vacate patients who continue to occupy beds beyond 20-days.

Following a visit to the Bengaluru West division Covid war room in Malleswaram, the CM said it was clear from the war room data that around 835 patients were occupying beds beyond 20 days in the West division of the city.

According to him, of the 9,242 hospitalised Covid patients in the West division, 6,500 patients were admitted 10 days ago, 503 patients 10-20 days ago, and 332 patients 21-30 days ago. Questioning the necessity of these groups of 332 and 503 patients to keep occupying beds after they have recovered, the CM said hospitals must discharge ‘overstaying’ patients so as to free up beds for others. The CM opined that beyond 10 days, patients should be discharged and home care and medication support provided to them.

Terming the Covid war room management in Karnataka as one of the best in the country, the CM said data generated in war rooms in Karnataka give an accurate, real-time picture of admissions, duration of treatment and availability of hospital beds.

Surya’s exposé

The Chief Minister’s recce of the West division war room comes in the wake of the ‘bribe for bed’ scam exposé by his own partyman Tejasvi Surya. The Bengaluru South MP had alleged that some war room staff in Bengaluru were colluding with hospitals and civic officials to block government quota beds, which were then sold for anything between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh.

Subsequently, the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch arrested seven persons, including doctors, in this connection and have interrogated nearly two dozen persons working in hospitals and Covid war rooms.
