Rs 1.20 lakh was extorted from son of patient to allot a bed in MS Ramaiah Hospital

A day after Bengaluru South MP and BJP Yuva Morcha national president Tejasvi Surya, along with other BJP MLAs, made the shocking revelation of a bed-for-bucks scam by touts gaming the BBMP system, the Sadashivanagar police have arrested one Arogya Mitra and two other persons for allegedly blackmarketing a hospital bed.
The scam was unearthed by the Central Division police and a case has been registered in the Sadashivnagar police station.
One Laxmidevamma was diagnosed with Covid-19 and was admitted in a private hospital in Nelamangala. She required more intensive medical treatment and was brought to People Tree Hospital. However, there were no ICU beds available. Two persons connected with the hospital, Venkata Subbarao (Accused 1) and Manjunath (Accused 2), connived with Punith (Accused 3, currently working as an Arogya Mitra in MS Ramaiah Hospital) to extort Rs 1.20 lakh from Lakshmisha, the son of the patient, in return for allotting a bed in MS Ramaiah Hospital.
Patient died later
Lakshmisha paid Rs 50,000 via Google pay and Rs 70,000 in cash, after which his mother was allotted a bed in MS Ramaiah Hospital. However, Laxmidevamma died a few hours later.
On Wednesday, based on a complaint by Lakshmisha, a case was registered in the Sadashivnagar police station and the trio were arrested.
The incident came to light when Chethan, brother of Lakshmisha, contacted the police control room (112) which informed the Sadashivnagar police Inspector.
