Bengaluru: The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) has urged consumers not to misuse domestic electricity connections for commercial or other unauthorized purposes, warning that strict legal action will be taken against violators.

According to BESCOM, several instances have been detected where electricity connections obtained under the domestic tariff category (LT-1) are being illegally used for commercial establishments such as shops, business units, factories, guest houses, mess facilities, service apartments, paying guest accommodations, and office spaces.

The power utility stated that such misuse of domestic electricity connections is a violation of electricity regulations. BESCOM officials warned that connections found to be used for unauthorized purposes may be immediately disconnected and legal proceedings initiated against the consumers involved.

BESCOM has advised consumers who are currently using domestic connections for other purposes to visit their respective BESCOM sub-division offices immediately and apply for a change in the appropriate tariff category to regularize their electricity connection as per rules.

The power utility also clarified that during festivals, public celebrations, or religious events, consumers should not draw electricity from domestic connections for temporary setups. Instead, they must apply for temporary electricity connections through the concerned BESCOM offices.

BESCOM further cautioned that action will be taken under Sections 126 and 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, along with Clause 42 of the Electricity Supply Regulations, against consumers found misusing domestic power connections.

Officials emphasized that these measures are aimed at ensuring fair power distribution, preventing revenue loss to the utility, and maintaining proper tariff compliance across Bengaluru’s electricity consumers.
