Bengaluru, March 12: The Bengaluru South City Corporation has accelerated the installation of energy-efficient LED streetlights across multiple wards, as part of its initiative to reduce electricity consumption and improve street illumination.

According to officials, the installation of LED streetlights has already been completed in wards falling under the BTM Layout, Bommanahalli and Jayanagar Assembly constituencies, while the work is currently in progress in wards under the Bengaluru South and Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituencies.

At present, a total of 56,857 energy-efficient LED streetlights have been installed across the Bengaluru South City Corporation limits.

Overall, the corporation area has 1,34,187 streetlights, out of which 68,374 streetlights are planned to be converted to LED lighting under the ongoing modernisation programme.

The LED streetlight project is being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aimed at replacing existing sodium vapour lamps and installing LED lights in multiple locations.

Under the project, LED streetlights are being installed on:

  • Existing streetlight poles
  • Vacant poles across wards
  • Public parks
  • High-mast lighting systems at major junctions

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce electricity consumption and maintenance costs for the city corporation.

Improving Public Safety and Visibility

Officials said that apart from saving energy, the LED lighting system will enhance visibility on roads and improve public safety during night hours.

The corporation expects that the large-scale shift to LED lighting will also lower power bills for street lighting infrastructure while ensuring brighter and more uniform illumination across roads and public spaces.
