New Delhi, March 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting with Chief Ministers and Lieutenant Governors of States and Union Territories via video conferencing to review preparedness in view of the evolving situation in West Asia and its potential impact on India.

Emphasising unity and coordination, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that India will successfully overcome the situation by working together as “Team India.” He recalled the country’s collective response during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that strong Centre-State coordination remains India’s biggest strength in handling global disruptions.

The Prime Minister underlined that the situation remains dynamic and requires continuous monitoring and adaptive strategies. He informed that an Inter-Ministerial Group has been operational since March 3, reviewing developments on a daily basis and taking timely decisions.

Highlighting key priorities, Modi stressed the need to maintain economic and trade stability, ensure energy security, safeguard the interests of citizens, and strengthen industry and supply chains. He called upon States to ensure the smooth functioning of supply chains and take strict action against hoarding and profiteering.

The Prime Minister directed States to activate control rooms at State and district levels and maintain administrative alertness to prevent disruptions. He also emphasised advance planning in the agriculture sector, particularly in monitoring fertiliser storage and distribution to ensure farmers do not face difficulties during the upcoming Kharif season.

Cautioning against misinformation, Modi stressed the importance of disseminating accurate and credible information to prevent panic. He also warned citizens and authorities against online frauds and fake agents. Special attention was advised for border and coastal States to tackle emerging challenges related to shipping, essential supplies, and maritime operations.

He further suggested that States with citizens residing in West Asia activate helplines, appoint nodal officers, and establish district-level support systems to assist affected families and ensure timely information flow.

The Prime Minister highlighted that recent efforts to strengthen India’s economic and supply systems are proving beneficial. He urged continued engagement with industries and MSMEs to maintain production stability and employment. He also called for robust coordination mechanisms at all administrative levels, including regular reviews by Chief Secretaries and close monitoring at the district level.

In addition to immediate measures, Modi stressed long-term preparedness through promotion of alternative energy sources such as biofuels, solar energy, electric mobility, and expansion of piped natural gas networks. He also emphasised enhancing domestic exploration of oil and natural gas.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted steps taken by the government, including ensuring timely LPG availability and reducing excise duties on petrol and diesel. Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan presented an overview of the current situation and recommendations for States.

Chief Ministers across States appreciated the measures taken by the Centre under the leadership of the Prime Minister. They welcomed the reduction in fuel excise duties and the increase in commercial LPG allocation to 70% of pre-crisis levels.

CMs expressed confidence that the situation remains stable, with adequate availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG, and reaffirmed their commitment to work closely with the Centre to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and safeguard citizens’ interests.
