NIA searches premises of Bengaluru riots accused

BENGALURU:

The National Investigative Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted simultaneous searches at seven locations in Bengaluru, in connection with the riots of August last year in the DJ Halli and KG Halli police station limtis.

Searches were conducted at the premises of seven absconding charge-sheeted accused persons in RC-34/2020/NIA/DLI and RC-35/2020/NIA/DLI. The two cases were originally registered as FIR no.195/2020 and FIR no.229/2020 of the DJ Halli and KG Halli police stations respectively

Alleged derogatory post

On August 11, 2020, a mob of the minority community, protesting against an allegedly derogatory Facebook post about prophet Mohammed, had turned violent and targeted the police stations. The mob had attacked police personnel, burnt police vehicles damaged government and private properties in the vicinity of the police stations.

After re-registering the police cases, NIA on February 5, 2021 filed chargesheets against 109 and 138 accused persons respectively in the two cases.

During Saturday’s searches, incriminating documents and electronic devices were seized from the premises of the absconding accused persons.
