Modi Says Fast-Track Courts Bill for Paper Leak Cases to be Taken Up by Cabinet
New Delhi, July 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the Union government will introduce a Bill providing for fast-track courts and stricter punishment in paper leak cases, as part of measures to tackle examination-related malpractices.
In a post on X, Modi said paper leaks have caused immense distress to lakhs of students and their families. He said the government has taken several steps over the past two-and-a-half months, with those responsible being arrested and lodged in jail.
The Prime Minister said the government’s immediate priority was to ensure that students did not lose an academic year. He said fresh examinations for around 22 lakh candidates were conducted in the shortest possible time and the results were declared on July 19.
Modi said the government was not satisfied with these measures alone and had directed officials to prepare a draft law for fast-track courts and stringent punishment. He said the draft had been submitted to him late on Thursday after officials worked continuously on it.
According to the Prime Minister, the draft legislation will be discussed by the Union Cabinet, after which it will be finalised based on the suggestions of ministers. He added that with Parliament’s second week beginning on Monday, the government would make efforts to introduce and secure passage of the Bill at the earliest.
