Light weight BIS approved helmets mandatory for two-wheeler riders
NEW DELHI:
The use and sale of light-weight Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) approved helmet has been made mandatory by the government to reduce the number of two-wheeler road accidents.
According to an order issued here on Friday by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the use and sale of light weight helmets approved by BIS and as per their quality control, has been made mandatory for the two wheeler riders.
The Ministry said in a release in this regard that according to the instructions of the Supreme Court, the Road Safety Committee was constituted to consider the light weight helmet suited to the climatic condition of the country and to ensure the operation of the helmet which included experts from various fields including specialist doctors from AIIMS and experts from BIS.
In the year 2018 the committee had recommended light weight helmets in its report, which has been accepted.
As per the new system, from now on only BIS approved helmets will be manufactured and sold in the country. (Agency)
