New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising concerns over delimitation, the delay in proroguing the Monsoon Session of Parliament and indications that a special session of Parliament may be convened.
Kharge disclosed the letter through a post on X on Thursday. He said Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister had publicly indicated during a television interview that a special parliamentary session could be called.
In the letter, Kharge reiterated his earlier request that the government convene an all-party meeting to discuss its delimitation proposals. He said political parties should be given adequate time to study the proposals before they are introduced in any special session that the government may be contemplating.
Kharge also linked the Parliamentary Affairs Minister’s remarks to the continuing delay in the formal prorogation of the Monsoon Session.
“The Indian National Congress is very clear,” the letter said, while placing the party’s position on the proposed delimitation exercise.
Among the points visible in the letter, Congress sought the continuation of the Lok Sabha’s existing strength of 543 members for another 25 years and retention of the present state-wise allocation of Lok Sabha seats for the same period.
Kharge’s letter places delimitation and the possibility of a special session back at the centre of the political debate. The communication represents the Congress president’s stated position; the Prime Minister’s response was not available in the material reviewed.
