Exempt govt transport from tolls, Gadkari urged

With the entire country under lockdown, the public transport sector in Karnataka has taken a huge hit. Deputy CM and Transport Minister Laxman Savadi has requested Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to exempt state transport operators from toll tax the next 6 months.Â
In a video conversation with Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday, Savadi said the lockdown had resulted in huge losses for the state transport sector and the state-run operators like BMTC, KSRTC, NWKRTC and NEKRTC need an exemption from toll levies for the next 6 months.
Savadi said it was necessary for private drivers and attendants (cleaners) to go for an insurance scheme, as the coronavirus fall-out would the private transport sector too.
The DyCMÂ described the steps taken by Karnataka in combating the coronavirus, and requested that the Central government pay for the cost of mobile clinics in the state.
