Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Sunday endorsed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s appointment to the newly formed OBC Advisory Board constituted by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), stating that the move was a result of detailed consultations within the party and aimed at strengthening social justice initiatives.
Responding to media queries, Shivakumar said, “Yes, I had discussed this with Siddaramaiah. I also suggested that the first OBC Advisory Board meeting be held at the KPCC office in Bengaluru. About 40 leaders, including former chief ministers, Union ministers, MPs, and senior OBC leaders, will participate.”
Highlighting the importance of the board, he added, “OBCs make up a significant portion of the population across India. It’s important that they are given equal opportunities and representation. Our government is committed to inclusivity and social justice.”
Shivakumar stressed that the Congress party has departments dedicated to different communities — including OBC, SC, minorities, and farmers. “We see everyone with equality. Even among Lingayats and Kurubas, many fall under the OBC category. We are working to ensure all voices are heard,” he said.
Taking aim at the BJP, the KPCC chief remarked, “The BJP’s only job is to criticise. If they don’t, they won’t feel at peace. But I’ve always maintained — criticisms fade, meaningful work remains.”
The Congress party’s move to elevate Siddaramaiah’s role in the national OBC leadership structure is being viewed as a strategic step to consolidate its base among backward classes, particularly ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
