Bengaluru: The management of Conrad Hotel is reported to have been booked for causing death by negligence following the deaths of two foreign nationals in its swimming pool on October 30. The reported case under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita names the hotel management as accused number one.
Reported FIR details identify the complainant as Silvia Hotuatova, 47, a Slovakian national whose husband, Juraj Horvat, 45, was among those who died. Her written complaint concerns the incident between 5.15 pm and 5.30 pm at the hotel’s third-floor pool on Kensington Road.
According to the reported account of the incident, cries for help were heard from the pool area and Horvat’s wife found him floating motionless in the water. Hotel employee Rahul Tiwari, 28, entered the pool to rescue him and reportedly suffered an electric shock. Staff then switched off the main power supply and pulled those in the pool out.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered on the pool deck and American national Mathew DeSantis, 41, was revived, according to the rescue account. Horvat and a 57-year-old German national died, while DeSantis and Tiwari were injured. All four were taken to hospital by ambulance.
Forensic experts and electrical inspectors were reported on November 1 to be examining the pool’s underwater lighting and wiring to establish the source of the suspected electrical leakage. The precise cause remained under investigation.
City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh had earlier said the incident appeared to involve electrocution, but the exact cause could not be determined until medical, technical and expert reports were received. Police had cordoned off the pool area. Read our earlier report on the pool incident and the commissioner’s statement.
