Chennai–Bengaluru Travel Time to Drop to 73 Minutes as High-Speed Rail Push Gains Momentum
Bengaluru: In a major boost to India’s high-speed rail ambitions, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said that travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru could come down to just 73 minutes, a transformation that would effectively turn the two cities into a single integrated economic hub. The Minister made these remarks during his visit to the BEML Tippasandra campus in Bengaluru, where he reviewed developments related to high-speed rail manufacturing.
Highlighting the transformative impact of next-generation rail systems, Vaishnaw said high-speed trains will fundamentally change the way cities are connected, reducing distances and enabling faster economic and social integration across regions.
Focusing on strengthening inter-city connectivity, the Minister announced that Mumbai–Bengaluru links will be enhanced with two new services, including a Mail/Express train equipped with LHB coaches via Hubballi, and the upcoming launch of a Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, which is expected to significantly improve long-distance travel comfort and efficiency.
On regional connectivity, Vaishnaw confirmed that a Vande Bharat service between Mangaluru and Bengaluru will be launched soon, with planning already factoring in connectivity to Madgaon and other coastal cities of Karnataka. He noted that key technical challenges have been resolved, including the completion of electrification on the Hassan–Mangaluru section and the deployment of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems to enhance safety in difficult coastal terrain.
The Minister reiterated that these developments mark a crucial step in building a modern, efficient rail network that not only reduces travel time but also strengthens economic integration and regional accessibility across India.
