Bengaluru, May 5: With the monsoon approaching and pre-monsoon showers already exposing civic gaps, Bengaluru West Zone Commissioner Dr. K.V. Rajendra has issued strict instructions to officials to ensure full preparedness, warning of action in case of negligence.

Chairing a high-level review meeting on monsoon readiness and ongoing development works, the Commissioner directed all departments to work with advance planning, coordination, and accountability to prevent rain-related disasters across all 112 wards under the West Zone.

Focus on Drains, Roads and Flood Prevention

Highlighting recurring urban flooding issues, officials have been asked to:

  • Desilt stormwater drains along arterial and sub-arterial roads
  • Clean shoulder drains and gratings to ensure smooth water flow
  • Conduct field inspections to verify ground-level execution

The move comes after recent rains led to waterlogging and complaints from several areas, raising concerns over preparedness.

Unsafe Structures to Be Removed Immediately

In a major public safety directive, the Commissioner ordered the identification and removal of:

  • Dilapidated buildings and compound walls
  • Weak shelter points and open manholes
  • Dangerous flex boards and banners at risk of collapse

Officials have been instructed to issue notices and take swift action to prevent accidents.

Direct Engagement with Residents

To minimise risk during heavy rains, authorities have been told to:

  • Identify low-lying and vulnerable zones
  • Maintain constant communication with local residents
  • Coordinate with fire services and police for emergency response

Road Safety and Pedestrian Protection Measures

The Commissioner also stressed:

  • Clear marking of speed breakers and road humps
  • Immediate removal of debris, fallen branches, and open slabs from footpaths
  • Action against encroachments on pedestrian pathways

Additional Key Measures Ordered

Several urgent steps were discussed and mandated during the बैठक:

  • Deploy adequate equipment like chainsaws for tree and branch removal
  • Ensure complete desilting of major stormwater canals
  • Fill potholes on priority
  • Remove concrete around tree bases to aid drainage
  • Clear illegal cables posing hazards
  • Prevent water stagnation in underpasses
  • Ensure streetlights are functional and repaired where needed
  • Monitor local events to avoid crowd-related risks during rains

Senior officials, including Joint Commissioner Sangappa and other engineering and administrative heads, were present in the meeting.

The directives underline a critical civic message — monsoon preparedness is not just administrative duty but a public safety necessity. With Bengaluru witnessing repeated flooding, tree falls, and infrastructure failures in recent years, timely execution of these measures will directly impact commuter safety, residential security, and overall city resilience.
