Bengaluru, January 27: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday said the Karnataka government will soon convene a meeting to discuss and decide compensation for land losers affected by the Arakavati Layout project.
Responding to questions during a Calling Attention motion in the Legislative Assembly, Shivakumar said the long-pending issue would be reviewed at the earliest, with a clear decision to follow.
Replying to BJP MLA Muniraju, who raised concerns over the failure to provide compensation even two decades after the layout was formed, the Deputy Chief Minister said the Arakavati Layout was initiated during the tenure of former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna.
โOver the years, several applicants were allotted sites under the layout. However, it was not possible to provide alternative sites to land losers in the same area. Due to legal complexities, the High Court and Supreme Court intervened, following which the Keshav Narayan Committee was constituted to examine the issue and recommend a way forward,โ Shivakumar explained.
He assured the House that he remains committed to ensuring fair compensation to affected farmers. โA meeting will be convened shortly with the committee members, and I will request them to expedite the process so that a decision can be taken at the earliest. A detailed response will be provided in the coming days,โ he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister also pointed out that similar constraints exist in the Shivaram Karanth Layout, where courts have barred acceptance of fresh applications. โIn such cases, priority will be given to land losers. The Arakavati Layout issue too will be resolved as soon as possible,โ he added.
