Covid scare keeping farmers away from Bengaluru
BENGALURU:
Tomato prices have shot up due to heavy rains statewide and a poor harvest. Tomato prices at the Kolar APMC skyrocketed on Saturday to Rs 1,333 per quintal.
On Saturday, 15,076 quintals of tomatoes arrived at the APMC. With tomatoes being shipped to neighbouring states, prices in the state have shot up.
Retailers in the KR market and Kalasipalya market are selling vegetables at double the wholesale price. One reason is that due to the pandemic scare, farmers from other districts are reluctant to bring vegetables to the city to sell.
Among greens, coriander has decreased from Rs 40 a bunch a fortnight ago to Rs 15, and cucumber from Rs 15 to Rs 5-10.
