BENGALURU, March 6: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar assured the Karnataka State Contractors Association during a protest at Freedom Park that he, along with Minister Satish Jarkiholi, would arrange a meeting with the Chief Minister to address contractors’ concerns regarding outstanding payments.

While addressing the demonstrators, Shivakumar acknowledged the crucial role contractors play in the state’s development, stating, “You are not just supporting your livelihood but also contributing to the state’s well-being. It is not our intention to deny you your payments.” He assured that he would ensure justice for the association’s president, Manjunath, who regularly issues statements to the media.

Shivakumar advocated for giving contractors a platform within the legislative assembly, similar to the representation allotted to teachers and other sectors. “We must find a way to resolve this issue,” he emphasized.

He highlighted that there are approximately ₹37,000 crore in outstanding bills across various departments, including ₹13,000 crore in his department alone, and urged the contractors to refrain from taking on new work without available funds. “We need to create a pathway that could involve bonds or other methods worth around ₹50,000 crore to solve this issue,” he said.

In response to rising costs affecting the public, the Deputy CM noted the government’s guarantee scheme, allocating about ₹52,000 crore annually to support citizens. He questioned the federal government’s contribution, mentioning the lack of adequate budget allocations, especially for crucial projects like the Bhadra Upper Dam scheme.

“They have not contributed to Bengaluru’s development. Regardless, we must fulfill our duties. Do not abandon us, and we will not abandon you. Let’s discuss and see how we can resolve these issues together,” he concluded, reaffirming his and his colleagues’ commitment to the contractors.
