Vandals run riot at city hotspotĀ

Home Minister warns of arrests; corporator, MLA urge calm

BENGALURU:

More than 150 people at Padarayanapura vandalised health camps and police barricades at Padarayanapura after they refused to go with BBMP and health officials to  quarantine centres on Sunday evening.

Padarayanapura is one amongĀ  two city localities which has been completely sealed after more than 19 positive cases were reported. Sources saidĀ  health officials accompanied by BBMP officials and police had gone to take 58 primary and secondary contacts to a quarantine centre when someĀ  of them refused.

ā€œBBMP officials had gone to quanratine secondary contacts. When many of them refused to come, we informed the higher-ups in BBMP. We were asked to return. Barricades and steel sheets used to seal the area were removed and thrown onto the street,ā€ said an officer who was part of the team.

Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said,” Such incidents won’t be tolerated. I have issued orders to arrest the culprits who do not want peace in society.” Local corporator Imran Pasha and senior police officials rushed to the spot  later and trued to diffuse the situation.

DCP (West) Ramesh Banoth also visited the spot. ā€œCCTV footage will be checked and the vandals will be booked,ā€ the DCP said. ā€œNo officials were attacked, only property was damaged. 58 persons had to be quarantined from the area, and 15 had been taken in the afternoon. In the evening, officials came to pick up another 30 but by  that time arguments started and soon more than 100 people gathered and vandalised property . A case had been registered and identification of the miscreants is being done,ā€ Banoth said.

Local Congress MLA BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan tweeted: ā€œI request everyone at Padarayanapura ward to remain calm and follow the guidelines of BBMP. This seal-down is essential to protect your lives. So stay at home andprevent the spread.ā€
