NEW DELHI/BENGALURU:
The Supreme Court announced on Tuesday that it will review the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea against the Karnataka High Court’s decision to halt the investigation into DK Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, in a Disproportionate Assets (DA) case.
Assistant Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the CBI, argued that the entire investigation had been suspended based on false information. The CBI had previously informed the court that the interim stay by the High Court was granted without giving them an opportunity to present their case.
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Shivakumar, requested additional time to file a response.
The court will continue to hear the matter on Friday.
In June, the Karnataka High Court suspended the investigations conducted by the probe agency, which led the agency to approach the Supreme Court.
On October 17, the court refused to lift the interim order imposed by the Karnataka High Court, which had halted the investigation into the DA case against Shivakumar. However, the court did request Shivakumar’s response to the CBIs appeal against the court order.
According to the CBI’s petition, it is alleged that between April 2013 and April 2018, the total value of all acquisitions made by Shivakumar and his family members increased from Rs 128 crore to Rs 162 crore, indicating a significant rise of nearly 45 percent or approximately Rs 75 crore.
