Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has said Rahul Gandhi advised him to return to his vehicle out of concern for his safety during the October 12 protest, arguing that a short video could not convey the full context.
In a statement titled “Our Fight Is for Democracy, Not Distractions”, Shivakumar said Gandhi had asked him to be cautious. He described their relationship as one rooted in trust, affection and family.
“A 10-second video cannot tell the whole story,” Shivakumar said, calling for attention to remain on the campaign against what Congress calls “Vote Chori” and the protection of voting rights.
He described the previous day’s protest as a gathering of people united in defence of democracy. His explanation concerns Gandhi’s advice to him at that protest and presents his account of the interaction.

In a later update on October 13, Shivakumar said he joined Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, INDIA alliance leaders, Opposition MPs, student organisations and civil society members for a tea meeting at Gandhi’s residence in New Delhi.
He said those present were united in their commitment to uphold the Constitution, defend democracy and safeguard every Indian’s right to vote.
