Police chief says 2,000-strong mob attacked KJ Halli police station, Pulakeshi Nagar MLA’s house
BENGALURU:
City police commissioner Kamal Pant said a 2,000-strong mob attacked the KJ Halli police station and Pulakeshi Nagar Congress MLA Akhand Srinivas Murthy’s house at Kaval Byrasandra.
Briefing reporters at 1.45 am on Wednesday, Pant said initial reports had suggested a group of 50-100 had gathered at the KJ Halli police station, but later the mob grew to as many as 2,000 people.
As per Pant, the DCP (East) was the first to visit the KJ Halli police station to try and pacify the mob but was himself assaulted, along with 60 other police personnel, by the stone-throwing rioters.
Pant said Section 144 had been imposed across Bengaluru city while curfew has been imposed in the KJ Halli, DJ Halli, Shivajinagar and Banaswadi Sub-division police station limits.
He said it was very difficult for the police to control the situation. “As soon as the mob ran amok, the power supply was disconnected and this made our work very difficult. We couldn’t control it. Our men tried to convince the crowd but when things went out of control, we had to open fire, in which 2 persons died and some were injured,” the police chief said.
