BENGALURU:

In a pleasing exception to reports that private hospitals are evading their Covid commitments, city-based MS Ramaiah Hospital has of its own accord offered 340 beds for Covid patients and will step that up to 500 beds in the next fortnight.

Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan, who visited the hospital on Saturday, was given the assurance by MR Jayaram, head of the MS Ramaiah group, and Srinivas Murthy, head of  MS Ramaiah Medical College.

The DCM saw the Covid wards through the hospital’s CCTV cameras. “The hospital’s commitment to providing Covid beds should be appreciated,” he said.

The hospital currently has five ventilators and is planning to increase that to 25. The hospital management has appealed to the government to supply remdesivir for administering to Covid patients.

Notwithstanding the fact that around 10 per cent of its staff have been infected, the hospital continues to treat Covid patients, the management said.

Senior officials of the hospital and BBMP were present during the minister’s visit.
