Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has announced a major education initiative for the 2025-26 academic year, with plans to establish 4,134 new bilingual model schools across the state. These schools will implement Kannada-English bilingual instruction, aiming to enhance foundational learning and improve academic outcomes in government-run schools.
According to a circular issued on July 2, the Department of School Education will oversee the rollout, which includes targeted support in curriculum design, teaching methodologies, and infrastructure improvements. The move comes as part of broader efforts by the state to uplift public education quality through multilingual instruction and enhanced learning environments.
Key features of the initiative include:
- Identification of 2,897 government high schools and 11,555 primary/upper primary schools with potential to transition into bilingual models.
- Priority given to KPS/PM SHRI schools, backward taluks, and low-performing regions, with added academic and administrative support.
- Regular inspections and reviews by zonal and district-level education officers to ensure smooth implementation.
The circular also calls for proactive coordination among District Education Officers, DIETs, BEOs, and Cluster Resource Centres to facilitate the transition.
The government has emphasized the importance of this initiative in preparing students for multilingual proficiency while strengthening their academic foundation in both regional and global contexts.
