Revenue Minister Ashoka says DCs will distribute compensation to Covid-hit families in Karnataka

BENGALURU:

Launching the state government’s compensation programme for Covid-hit families, Revenue Minister R Ashoka on Thursday handed over a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to a family which had lost its kin to the deadly virus.

Speaking on the occasion, Ashoka said, “The state government had earlier announced financial relief of Rs 1 lakh to BPL families which had lost a family member to Covid. This has been officially launched today. So far, we have received 7,729 applications.”

The Minister said, “A committee has been set up at the district-level under the Deputy Commissioner to review applications and sanction the amount. The beneficiaries can also apply at the Nadakacheri. The amount will be given from the disaster management fund. Today, I have symbolically launched the programme and henceforth the DCs will distribute the amount. The Centre has also announced Rs 50,000 ex-gratia for families which have lost a family member to Covid. We are yet to get guidelines on the same.”

Criticizing the Congress party for organizing the Vokkaliga legislators’ meet, Ashoka said the BJP never discriminates against people based on caste. “It is the Congress agenda to divide people based on caste,” he said. He exuded confidence that the saffron party would bag the mayoral post in the Kalaburagi municipality and in this connections he said he had spoken to former CM HD Kumaraswamy and his brother HD Revanna.
