Bengaluru: The Karnataka Food Safety and Standards Authority has intensified enforcement actions to ensure food safety and consumer protection by conducting surprise inspections at major retail outlets in Belagavi. The operation comes as part of ongoing efforts to crack down on expired, misbranded, and unsafe food products being sold to the public.
Acting on consumer complaints and as part of routine surveillance, officials inspected 168 shops and retail outlets across the state on July 19. The inspections were carried out under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and related regulations framed in 2011.
During the raids, officials seized a range of expired and misbranded food items, particularly at three retail outlets:
- More Retail Pvt Ltd, Ganeshpur and Kolhapur Circle, Belagavi
- Reliance Fresh, Shivabasava Nagar, Belagavi
Seized items included:
- Tropicana Juice – 2L bottles
- Badam Milk – 10 bottles
- Baby Corn – 6 packets
- Grapes Pulp – 1 item
These items were either beyond expiry or mislabelled, violating the prescribed safety and labeling standards.
The department has emphasized its commitment to protecting public health and has warned that such enforcement drives will continue. Consumers are encouraged to stay alert and report violations.
