Bengaluru: Karnataka Director General and Inspector General of Police Dr. M. A. Saleem, IPS, has issued a public warning alerting citizens about a rising cyber fraud tactic known as the “Digital Arrest” scam, stressing that such a concept does not exist in the law enforcement system.

In a public awareness message, the Karnataka Police chief clarified that police officers never conduct arrests through video calls and urged people not to fall prey to fraudsters impersonating officials from police or investigative agencies.

Cyber criminals have reportedly been contacting victims through video calls while posing as law enforcement officials, falsely claiming that the person is involved in a criminal case and threatening them with immediate “digital arrest” unless money is transferred.

Dr. Saleem emphasized that such tactics are fraudulent and urged citizens to immediately disconnect such calls and report them to the authorities.

The Karnataka Police have advised the public that any suspicious video call claiming to be from a government or law enforcement agency demanding money should be treated as a scam.

Citizens are encouraged to report cyber fraud attempts immediately by calling the national cybercrime helpline number 1930 or the emergency helpline 112.

The police have reiterated that awareness remains the strongest defence against cyber fraud and urged the public to remain vigilant and share the message widely to prevent others from becoming victims.
