Bengaluru: Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) president K. Govindaraj has invited International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry to Bengaluru for sports-related engagements during a meeting in Nagoya, Japan.
Govindaraj, who is also FIBA Asia president and a Karnataka Legislative Council member, discussed sports development in the state with Coventry on the sidelines of the 20th Asian Games, according to a statement on the meeting.
Karnataka sports initiatives discussed
The statement said Govindaraj met Coventry during the Games’ opening ceremony and outlined the programmes and initiatives undertaken by the KOA to promote sports in Karnataka. He also briefed her on the state government’s support for sports development.
Bengaluru basketball events highlighted
Extending the invitation, Govindaraj said Bengaluru was emerging as a centre for basketball and other sports and had hosted more than 12 international basketball tournaments.
He also told Coventry that the FIBA Asia Women’s Basketball League would be held in Bengaluru next month, the statement said.
