Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday announced that the state government will soon constitute five new municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and conduct elections at the earliest.
Speaking at a state-level coordination meeting of the Guarantee Scheme Implementation Committees at Bharat Jodo Bhavan — also the KPCC headquarters — Shivakumar, who is also the KPCC President, said the restructuring of Bengaluru’s urban governance is essential.
“We have already set up the Greater Bengaluru Authority and are committed to forming five separate corporations. A committee headed by MLA Rizwan Arshad has been constituted to take this forward. Some may raise objections in public, but from an administrative point of view, this is necessary,” Shivakumar said.
He added that the move would also help strengthen the Congress’s grassroots structure. “Once these corporations are created, we must ensure our party workers receive appropriate representation and positions. The foundation for that has to be laid now,” he asserted.
Shivakumar stressed the importance of the cadre: “One person alone cannot bring a government to power. The strength of the party lies in its workers. While decisions may be taken at Vidhana Soudha, it is you — the workers — who are our ambassadors and carry the message to the people. The future of Bengaluru and of the Congress lies in your hands,” he told party leaders.
