Greater Bengaluru Clears Encroachments from 202.7 km of Footpaths in Three Days; ₹70 Crore Footpath Repair Drive Begins
Bengaluru, July 4: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has cleared encroachments from 202.70 kilometres of footpaths across Bengaluru in just three days under its ongoing Safe Footpath Campaign, while also announcing a ₹70 crore initiative to repair damaged footpaths to improve pedestrian infrastructure across the city.
Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the government’s focus is not limited to removing encroachments but also on creating safe, accessible and walkable footpaths for citizens.
“This is not just an encroachment removal drive. We have also started repairing damaged footpaths to improve walkability. The Government will spend ₹70 crore on footpath repairs across Bengaluru,” the Minister said.
Safe Footpath Campaign Gains Momentum
The campaign, being implemented by the Greater Bengaluru Authority under the Government of Karnataka, aims to ensure that footpaths remain free of obstructions and are safe for pedestrians.
The special drive is being carried out along arterial and sub-arterial roads across all five City Corporations under the GBA jurisdiction.

According to official figures, encroachments have been removed from a total of 202.70 kilometres of footpaths over the first three days of the campaign.

Focus on Pedestrian Safety
The Government said the campaign is intended to restore footpaths for pedestrians by removing illegal structures, shop extensions, temporary sheds, signboards and other obstructions that force people to walk on busy roads.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at improving road safety, reducing pedestrian accidents and promoting walkability across Bengaluru.
₹70 Crore for Footpath Repairs
Alongside the encroachment removal drive, the Government has launched a city-wide programme to repair damaged footpaths.
Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said ₹70 crore will be spent on restoring and upgrading footpaths so that citizens, including senior citizens, children and persons with disabilities, can use them safely.
The Greater Bengaluru Development Department said the Safe Footpath Campaign will continue across the city, with both encroachment removal and infrastructure improvements forming key components of Bengaluru’s long-term urban mobility and pedestrian safety strategy.
