HASSAN:

The Karnataka government is mulling tests on Maharashtra returnees before they can leave 14-day institutional quarantine for their homes. The new thinking is on account of the recent surge in Covid cases, most of whom are returnees from the neighbouring state.

Speaking to the media after reviewing the situation in the district, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said he would discuss the proposal with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and Law Minister JC Madhuswamy.

Dr Sudhakar said that as of May 31, 3,04,816 persons have been tested, of whom 2,97,052 have tested negative. Only 3,408 are positive, amounting to one in every 100 tests. This positivity rate of 1% is one of the lowest in the country.

The minister said people need not worry as the Karnataka government has made arrangements to treat 1.5 lakh cases at any point of time in the coming days.

Dr Sudhakhar directed the Deputy Commissioner of Hassan to hold a meeting with local IMA and KMC office-bearers and ask them to direct doctors to reopen clinics, dispensaries and nursing homes for treatment of non-Covid patients. The vaccination of babies against various diseases had not been done in the last three months, he pointed out.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhuswamy was among those present at the review meeting.

The minister later visited Hassan Medical College and Research Centre and instructed the director to fill up vacancies and to keep a record of outsourced workers.
