Bengaluru: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will launch the second phase of its ‘Ward One’ campaign across more than 50 wards from November 7, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced on Wednesday. The campaign has been extended until mid-December.
Chairing a virtual review meeting on the next phase, the Minister directed officials to prioritise the quality and completeness of work over the speed of execution. He said some wards need detailed assessment and additional time, and that the campaign should deliver sustainable results for citizens rather than simply meet numerical targets.
First phase: 43 wards
The first phase covered 43 wards across the five municipal corporations. Key figures given in the GBA release:
- 704 potholes repaired across a road network of 357.41 km.
- 426.6 tonnes of garbage cleared from 342 identified garbage black spots.
- 1,141.2 tonnes of construction and demolition waste and debris removed from 820 locations.
- 29.68 km of footpaths repaired.
- 455.15 km of footpath encroachments cleared.
What the Minister directed
- Involve Resident Welfare Associations and local civic organisations in the second phase, and inform them in advance about sanitation drives and other works.
- Coordinate more closely with the Forest Department on tree management and removal.
- Clean garbage on vacant BDA sites immediately, and take action where property owners have failed to maintain them.
- Intensify the drive against footpath encroachments now that the garbage situation is better under control.
- Include road-safety measures such as proper lane markings and reflectors in the redevelopment of major junctions.
- Strengthen community outreach so residents know about the improvements in their neighbourhoods.
- Consolidate suggestions received from residents during the first phase and use them in planning the second phase.
The meeting was attended by GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, Municipal Corporation Commissioners Ramesh D.S., Shilpa Nag, Pommal Sunil Kumar, Ramesh K.N. and Jagadish G., along with additional commissioners, chief engineers, executive engineers and other senior officials.
